Kitterly Kit Club - October Reveal

Oct 24, 2016 11:54:05 PM

Welcome to the October Shipment of the Kitterly Kit Club!

Normally I don’t like the longer nights that come with fall, but for some reason this year is different. These dark chilly nights seem like a great time to curl up with a hot drink and a project in your lap in front of a good movie or a warm fire (or both if you’re lucky).

Here’s your October project to give you something fun to do during these long nights.

Welcome to the September Shipment of the Kitterly Kit Club!

September already? The other day I saw a college student returning to school wearing a warm knit slouchy hat in the balmy high sixty degree weather. When you love hand knits you’ll take any excuse to wear them. This month’s kit is one you’ll come up with any excuse to wear.

This month’s shipment...

Ignoring the Rules of En(Gauge)ment

May 24, 2016 12:28:53 PM

Gauge swatches of Varying Sizes

How do you feel about rules? Some people want rules because they create structure and others don’t want them because they feel restricted by them.

Knitting doesn’t really have rules. Yeah, I know. Right now you might be churning with the need to say “But---!” or nodding your head and maybe feeling relieved. But it’s the honest truth. There are however, a lot of guidelines out there to help you make decisions. One thing I hope to cover frequently on this blog are what kind of guidelines there are, and what happens when you ignore them.

Let’s start with gauge.

So, how'd I do?

Kitterly Kit Club - April Reveal!

Kitterly April Kit Club Reveal Opposite Day Hat and Cowl

The yarn for April’s Kit Club was discovered at Stitches West in Northern California by one of the Co-Founders of Kitterly. She fell hard for the bright vivid colors and had to get a few skeins to bring back and share. We all agreed it was something special, so all we had to do next was find the perfect pattern. For that we turned to new patterns from a long-time favorite.

One Hour Into The Oven Mittens

Last week I told you about four great projects from Vickie Howell exclusive to Kitterly. We made a big promise about these projects: you'll be able to finish them in just a handful of lunch hours.

With a claim like that I felt a demonstration would be useful, so you could see how long it really takes to make one of these projects. Starting off I wanted to see how far could I get in an hour.

What Kind Of Knitter Are You?

What Kind Of Knitter Are You?

What kind of knitter are you?

In the creative world of crafting, I hate to think of anyone feeling restricted into being a certain "type" of anything, yet, it's impossible to ignore that we all have our tastes, our habits, and our obsessions, even if they only last for a few hours. Do you find yourself consistently drawn to a certain type of project? Do you only want to knit using small needles? Do you crave a finished project or do you wish the stockinette would just go on forever?

Here's a short and incomplete list of different knitters I have both met and been over the years.

Have you worked with cotton yarn?

Blue Sky Alpacas Worsted Cotton

I love wool and animal fibers. But right now it’s 75 degrees in Los Angeles and cotton has a lot of appeal. I'm sorry, I know it's still cold in parts of the states but it'll warm up there too. I don’t know about you, but I don’t like having wool in my lap on a hot day.

Have you worked with cotton yarn?

Kitterly March Kit Club

We found March’s kit club project while trekking up and down the aisles of a trade show. Amid numerous booths draped with hanks of colorful fiber, we came across Ancient Arts’ animal themed colorways. We knew we had found our March project.

Happy

Today we’re celebrating this Irish Holiday with the 100% Irish-American Carrie Maureen Sullivan of Irish Girlie Knits!

When coming up with our Saint Patrick's day newsletter we couldn't think of a better designer to feature. Carrie's patterns are frequently inspired by her Irish heritage. Her great-grandparents on both sides were from Ireland. She grew up celebrating the holiday with her family, eating corned beef and cabbage, potatoes, lots of soda bread, and listening to toe tapping Irish music.

Alas, Saint Patrick's day is only one day, but these are also great projects for the changing season. Our evenings are brighter, the weather is warming, and in just a few days it’ll officially be spring. It's a great time to start knitting bright colored accessories.

We're debuting two new yarns on Kitterly to compliment these projects, Anzula It Could Be Worsted and Anzula Croquet, as well as featuring a familiar favorite, Ewe Ewe So Sporty.

5 Fun Color Names (And Yarns!)

5 Fun Color Names

Working in the yarn store for years I got used to the wide variety of names that any particular color could be given. There is a certain blunt simplicity to a yarn with a color name like “Black”, “Red” or “Blue” that I can appreciate.

That said, they aren’t the most exciting names and sometimes a more creative color name can be a delightful discovery. With that in mind, I took a tour around our shelves of yarn and spotted 5 great yarns with fun color names. Here they are, presented in no particular order.

Life After Scarves

Life After Scarves

The first thing most knitters make is a scarf. They're great beginner projects. You cast on a reasonable number of stitches and just keep knitting with the goal of not adding or removing stitches. When you’re done you have an accessory that is even useful (occasionally) in Southern California.

But, after you’ve done a scarf (or ten) and want to learn something new, what next?

Circular Needles: Length Matters

Mar 3, 2016 11:00:18 AM

 Circular Needles

When it comes to circular needles, length does matter. On Kitterly we've taken care of figuring out the best needles for each project so that you don't have to do any work.

On the other hand, we know that you might already have some circular needles sitting at home that you want to use. In this post I’ll go over which length needles go best with which projects.

Lenticular Cowl

Remember those fun trading cards with the animated images that would shift and change depending on what angle you held them at? Turns out they’re called lenticular images, created by a printing method that combines at least two images to get that motion effect.

Our latest Kitterly original reminded us so much of these images that we had to call it the Lenticular Cowl!

5 Essential Notions for Beginners

Feb 26, 2016 2:21:46 PM

 wall of notions

If you’ve never knit before you probably have never encountered knitting notions. Notions is a broad term for a variety of small tools and accessories that can be used while knitting. There are a lot of notions out there. A lot. In my years working at the yarn store I got used to the look new knitters gave the wall full of packets of notions.

“Do I need any of these?” they’d ask, clutching their yarn and set of needles and wondering what they got themselves into.

Thankfully you really don’t need many notions as a beginner. In fact, there are only about 5 that most brand new knitters really need. Let me help you get started!
