Welcome to the August Shipment of the Kitterly Kit Club!

Are you going camping this summer? When I was a kid I spent time each summer in cabins by a lake far from the city. For a few nights we’d make a campfire and gaze up into a sky filled with stars undimmed by city lights. If you’re not making a campfire this summer we’ve still got you covered with our August Kit Club: Castra by Anthony Casalena featuring Yarn Love Scarlett O’Hara!

Our June Club features a special collaboration hailing from the beautiful country of Switzerland. Welcome to the May Shipment of the Kitterly Kit Club!

Do you live by the coast--any coast? We have Kit Club members from all over, and we love seeing the different states and cities on our shipping labels. (even countries!) This month’s project has a distinctly coastal theme, so even if you don’t live by one, we’re bringing it to you.

Crochet provisional cast-on allows you to come back to your cast-on edge and easily pick of those stitches to join pieces or continue knitting. Garter tab often calls for a brief provisional cast-on, as well as some socks, sweater patterns and accessories. There are lots of patterns that call for a provisional cast-on and the crochet method is a favorite among the Kitterly staff.

In this tutorial we are going to walk you through how to position your hands and yarn to cast on, and how to pick up and ‘unzip’ your provisional cast-on edge.

Lisa Hannes Silverleaf featuring Baah La Jolla

Welcome to the October Shipment of the Kitterly Kit Club! Normally I don’t like the longer nights that come with fall, but for some reason this year is different. These dark chilly nights seem like a great time to curl up with a hot drink and a project in your lap in front of a good movie or a warm fire (or both if you’re lucky).

Here’s your October project to give you something fun to do during these long nights...

Kitterly Kit Club April Reveal - Opposite Day Cowl and Hat by Carina Spencer

The yarn for April’s Kit Club was discovered at Stitches West in Northern California by one of the Co-Founders of Kitterly. She fell hard for the bright vivid colors and had to get a few skeins to bring back and share. We all agreed it was something special, so all we had to do next was find the perfect pattern. For that we turned to new patterns from a long-time favorite.

One Hour Into The Oven Mittens

Last week I told you about four great projects from Vickie Howell exclusive to Kitterly. We made a big promise about these projects: you'll be able to finish them in just a handful of lunch hours.

With a claim like that I felt a demonstration would be useful, so you could see how long it really takes to make one of these projects. Starting off I wanted to see how far could I get in an hour.

Vickie Howell Lunch Hour Knit Kits

We’re thrilled to debut Vickie Howell’s Lunch Hour Knit Kits, a set of four great projects exclusive to Kitterly! We were so excited when Vickie contacted us about working together on a project. While none of us had met Vickie we knew her from her numerous crafting endeavors. We’d seen her on DIY network’s Knitty Gritty, we’d come across her videos while looking up crafting ideas and techniques, we’d sold her books in the store and visited her blog. We were impressed not only with her wealth of knowledge, but with her eagerness for sharing it with the crafting community.

Have you worked with cotton yarn?

Apr 6, 2016 11:10:36 AM

I love wool and animal fibers. But right now it’s 75 degrees in Los Angeles and cotton has a lot of appeal. I'm sorry, I know it's still cold in parts of the states but it'll warm up there too. I don’t know about you, but I don’t like having wool in my lap on a hot day. Have you worked with cotton yarn?

Irish Girlie Knits St Patricks Day Post

Today we’re celebrating this Irish Holiday with the 100% Irish-American Carrie Maureen Sullivan of Irish Girlie Knits! When coming up with our Saint Patrick's day newsletter we couldn't think of a better designer to feature. Carrie's patterns are frequently inspired by her Irish heritage. Her great-grandparents on both sides were from Ireland. She grew up celebrating the holiday with her family, eating corned beef and cabbage, potatoes, lots of soda bread, and listening to toe tapping Irish music.

5 Interesting Color Names of Yarn

Working in the yarn store for years I got used to the wide variety of names that any particular color could be given. There is a certain blunt simplicity to a yarn with a color name like “Black”, “Red” or “Blue” that I can appreciate. That said, they aren’t the most exciting names and sometimes a more creative color name can be a delightful discovery. With that in mind, I took a tour around our shelves of yarn and spotted 5 great yarns with fun color names. Here they are, presented in no particular order.Read More

Life After Scarves

Mar 4, 2016 1:57:00 PM

The first thing most knitters make is a scarf. They're great beginner projects. You cast on a reasonable number of stitches and just keep knitting with the goal of not adding or removing stitches. When you’re done you have an accessory that is even useful (occasionally) in Southern California.

But, after you’ve done a scarf (or ten) and want to learn something new, what next?

Kitterly Original Lenticular Cowl

Remember those fun trading cards with the animated images that would shift and change depending on what angle you held them at? Turns out they’re called lenticular images, created by a printing method that combines at least two images to get that motion effect.

Our latest Kitterly original reminded us so much of these images that we had to call it the Lenticular Cowl!
