Welcome to the August Shipment of the Kitterly Kit Club!

In the August the freeways leading west from Kitterly’s inland office turn to parking lots before they hit the coast. Everyone wants to go to the beach. Our next project brings the sea to you, so you don’t need to worry about long drives or traffic.

Dream in Color Jilly

Designer Kirsten Kapur doesn’t remember learning to knit. In her family everyone expressed their ideas creatively, and knitting was one way to do it. She then further honed her skills early in her career when she worked in the ready-to-wear industry as an apparel and textile designer. There she learned the important basics of garment construction and surface design.

She loves designing knitwear because it draws on those skills, but now she gets to play with all types of fibers and an endless selection of colors. She finds inspiration in the interplay of unexpected combinations of colors and textures.

For Seastripes she wanted to create a simple to knit shawl with a lot of impact. She started with stripes and then found a lace pattern that reminded her of waves. While working on the crochet edging she was inspired to keep building on it, creating a dramatic edging that looks like more waves radiating outward.

The yarn for this kit is from Dream in Color. Owners Nancy and Veronica first opened a yarn store together in 2004, but soon after Veronica started experimenting with dyeing yarn in 2006 they closed the store to focus exclusively on their yarn. Their colors are diffuse and dreamy. Veronica has a fine art background and is inspired by the gentle but clear colors that can be found in nature.

Their Jilly is a beautiful single ply merino wool that is wonderfully soft to the touch and will drape beautifully once knit into the dramatic Seastripes shawl.

We hope you have some beautiful, long days to work on your August kit!
