The yarn for April’s Kit Club was discovered at Stitches West in Northern California by one of the Co-Founders of Kitterly. She fell hard for the bright vivid colors and had to get a few skeins to bring back and share. We all agreed it was something special, so all we had to do next was find the perfect pattern. For that we turned to new patterns from a long-time favorite.
This month’s shipment:
Opposite Day Cowl & Hat by Carina Spencer
featuring A Hundred Ravens Aesir
We’ve loved Carina Spencer’s designs for years and most of us have knit at least one of her patterns. Carina is a professionally trained chef who discovered in knitting the elements which had drawn her to cooking. As she describes it, the “mixing essential ingredients *just so* to create a unique, tangible expression of energy.” Her patterns are always meticulous and detailed and a pleasure to knit.
Her Opposite Day Cowl and Hat were perfect for the bright yarn and also a great project. While it may look complex it’s really just simple stripes and some slipped stitches that are fun to knit. Switching up the colors between the hat and cowl keep the projects interesting and engaging.
The yarn is from A Hundred Ravens, a small hand dyer based in New Hampshire. It’s no surprise that color is super important to them, you can see it in their yarn. Their general policy? The more color, the better! They are known for deep, saturated colors inspired by myths, legends, books, movies and an historical figure or three. Color is dyer Kate Bachus' interpretive dance.
The company was started by Kate in 2010 as a hobby and became a fulltime business in 2014. Aesir is their sportweight superwash merino that is springy and soft and a pleasure to work with.
With two skeins of yarn we knit the sample of the cowl and Adult S/M hat in Version 2 (striped), switching the main color between the two. If you make the cowl and the Adult L/XL hat or do Version 1 (unstriped) we cannot guarantee you will have enough yarn.
We hope you get to enjoy knitting outdoors in the warmer weather as you work with these spectacular colors and fun stitches. We’re busy at work on next month's shipment!
