Welcome to the January Shipment of the Kitterly Kit Club!

It’s a brand new year! Those old projects and UFO’s of 2015 may be giving you the stink eye, but isn’t it time to cast on a new project? Throw the projects of the past in the closet until spring cleaning, because here’s the first Kit Club shipment of 2016!

This month’s shipment:

Versus by Hilary Smith Callis, featuring Manos Del Uruguay Fino.

Versus is a shawl of opposites.

The main body is a two color eyelet and stripe triangle, joined with a thick perpendicular extension that is a negative of the original pattern. Simple shaping forms contradicting lines, and the perfect unsymmetrical triangular to wrap up in. Designer Hilary Smith Callis may be a bit of a contradiction herself. She grew up on a farm that has been growing melons for about a century in California. She moved to the big city to get degrees in Greek & Latin and Art History, but somehow ended up working at NASA. After starting a family she decided to move back to the small-town where she grew up. Hilary finds inspiration for her patterns everywhere, from astronomical objects to Anthropologie, but for her the most important thing is the yarn. The yarn usually knows what it wants to become, she just needs to listen.

Featured Yarn: Manos del Urugay Fino

Manos del Uruguay yarns are created by the Manos Cooperative, founded in 1968 by five women to develop economic opportunities for women. They started by selling handcrafts, but in time spinning, dyeing, weaving and knitting became their focus. Initially the “faded”, striated colors of Manos yarn were the result of heating yarn for dyeing in large, iron kettles over wood fires. Over the years, the dying process has been refined to provide consistency of color without losing the trademark stria shading. Each purchased skein of Manos del Uruguay yarn helps a woman to support her family. Each skein is signed, so you know who made your yarn, and from which village it came. Their Fino yarn combines the softness of merino wool with the lustre of silk in a lightweight yarn. Fino features a new dye process that yields complex, subtle, tonal colors.

We’ve chosen 3 beautiful color combinations in the theme of Hilary’s shawl, combining lights and darks, neons and neutrals. We suggest you use Mourning as the main color with Fascinator, Amethyst Earring as the main color with Gilt, and Pocketwatch as the main color with Rosewater.
