Welcome to the March Shipment of the Kitterly Kit Club!
Spring has officially started but there is still plenty of cold weather and reasons to wrap yourself up in a warm, cozy shawl.
This month’s shipment:
Apertura by Hilary Smith Callis
featuring Madelinetosh Tosh Sock
Designer Hilary Smith Callis finds inspiration for her patterns everywhere, from astronomical objects to Anthropologie, but for her the most important thing is the yarn. The yarn usually knows what it wants to become, she just needs to listen.
With Apertura she played with the simple contrast of garter stripes against stockinette background and the texture it created. She always thinks about how the finished object will look worn and felt the reversal of colors created interesting swirls when the shawl is around your neck. The asymmetrical shape is a great shape for wearing it wrapped. Since the reversed colors reminded her of a photo negative, she picked the photography-inspired name Apertura.
Madelinetosh Tosh Sock is a great, squishy wool yarn perfect for this shawl. Amy Hendrix, the dyer behind Madelinetosh, started the business by experimenting in her home kitchen. She used the traditional methods of dyeing by layering colors two or three at a time, mixing and combining dyes in glazes and washes of colors. The results were beautiful and unique, and the beginning of the company that would become Madeline Tosh. We love the gorgeous combinations of her colors for this months kit.
Next month we’ll be a little further into spring and have another beautiful project to share with you!
